Has The Blessing Become An Idol?

Lara had been praying to God for admission into the University for 5 years. She even made a vow to God that once she got the admission, she’d represent God on campus full-time. She vowed to preach the gospel and live for Christ unashamedly. Last year, our darling Sister got the admission and BAM! Off she went! To where? You ask? Lara went left! From January 2018 through December 2018, Lara went to Church on four occasions only – when she visited her family. Her excuse for forgetting her God is that she had been writing several scholarship exams, and school work had been too cumbersome for her.  After the Christmas holidays, she returned to school as per usual, and discovered that the worst had happened. Lara bagged 4 As, 2 Bs, and 3 Fs. Yes, you saw that correctly – 3 Fs! She was dumbfounded at first. After crying her eyes out, she made her way to the offices of the Lecturers. To cut the long story short, it was discovered that Lara shaded the wrong types for her objective questions on her OMR sheets. Her lecturers did not show sympathy. Now, guess who her last resort was? GOD.

The story I just shared with you is a fiction. Still, similar scenarios happen on a daily basis. Some persons seek God when they need stuff, and when they finally get it, they change their god.

Dear One – the car, the shoes, the jewelries, the job, the businesses, the house, the spouse – Have any of these blessings of God become your idol?

i.dol

noun

an image or representation of a god used as an object of worship.

…and One might say, “I sure do not worship my blessings.” Friend, if that blessing gets your devotion and attention more than God does, if it gets equal attention as God does, I must let you know it’s an idol. The value we attach to our possessions indirectly tell where we place God. Let’s be honest. It’s easy to say – “I love God. I honor Him. He takes the first place in my life.” The question is – do our words match our actions?

When we have needs, we knock on Heaven’s door. After these needs are met, some of us disappear. We become almost unreachable by God. Worse still, the blessings then become snares to the persons who are blessed. How unfortunate.

“Furthermore, the Israelites acted on Moses’ word and asked the Egyptians for articles of silver and gold, and for clothing. And the LORD gave the people such favor in the sight of the Egyptians that they granted their request. In this way they plundered the Egyptians.” Exodus 12:36 [Berean Study Bible]

“When the people saw how long it was taking Moses to come back down the mountain, they gathered around Aaron. “Come on,” they said, “make us some gods who can lead us. We don’t know what happened to this fellow Moses, who brought us here from the land of Egypt.” So Aaron said, “Take the gold rings from the ears of your wives and sons and daughters, and bring them to me.” All the people took the gold rings from their ears and brought them to Aaron. Then Aaron took the gold, melted it down, and molded it into the shape of a calf. When the people saw it, they exclaimed, “O Israel, these are the gods who brought you out of the land of Egypt!”” Exodus 32:1-4 [New Living Translation]

Before the Israelites left Egypt for the promised land, God made sure that every gold, silver, and precious raiment of the Egyptians were transferred to the Israelites. He blessed them tremendously. Still, because they considered God too slow sometime afterwards, they worshiped the same gold God blessed them with. We know the rest of the story. The golden calf became a snare unto them.

It’s glaring that blessings can become snares when we misuse them and forget the God who blessed us. So, how can you and I retain our blessings and love God even more?

“Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” Psalms 119:11 [King James Version]

The Word of God is an all-time antidote to sin. The Word of God is Jesus is printed letters. The more we ingest revelations from God’s Word, the more we do the will of God. Invariably, we become more like God. The Word of God is our source. There is none other.

So dear, if the blessings of God in your life currently has more of your time than God does, I advice that you check the level of God’s Word in your heart.  If God’s Word is hidden in your heart, it’ll be expressed in your life. Give time to God’s Word. There is no other way around it.

“My son, pay attention to my words and be willing to learn; Open your ears to my sayings. Do not let them escape from your sight; Keep them in the center of your heart. For they are life to those who find them, And healing and health to all their flesh.” Proverbs 4:20-22 [Amplified Bible]

I earnestly pray this blog post has ministered life and truth to you. Spread the truth by sharing with your friends. Your comments are also appreciated.

Remain blessed, and in love with the One who blesses. Till I come on here next time.

With Selfless Love,

Abba’s Daughter – Your Sister
